Here are some examples of past projects entered by schools and students from around Western Australia.

Harvey Primary School - Beyond the Rabbit Proof Fence

Harvey Primary School was awarded the Overall BHP Billiton Iron Ore Award in the PALS awards for 2006 for their project “Beyond the Rabbit Proof Fence” which explored the history of the Stolen Generation.

 
Riverlands Montessori School - Wednesdays at the Autumn Centre
Riverlands Montessori School in Swan was awarded the 2006 PALS Youth Ambassador Award for the continuation of their outstanding project “Wednesdays at the Autumn Centre”.
 
Baldivis Primary School - Cooloongars Djaliny, Cooloongars Kadidjiny

Baldivis Primary School was awarded an Encouragement Award in the 2006 PALS awards for their project titled, Cooloongars Djaliny, Cooloongars Kadidjiny – Children Listening, Children Learning, which set up an interaction and friendship between the students and older Noongar people.

 
Christian Brother's College Fremantle - Kirriwkurra Outreach
Christian Brother's College Fremantle's PALS project submission, 'Kirriwkurra Outreach' received a south metropolitan Encouragement Award for supporting significant interaction and cultural exchange between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.
 
Chrysalis Montessori School - The Power and Sacredness of the Spoken Word
Chrysalis Montessori School on Glendalough was the winner of a PALS 2006, north metropolitan Highly Commended award for their project 'The Power and Sacredness of the Spoken Word', a highly interactive and innovative way of learning and sharing knowledge.

 
Clontarf Aboriginal College - Reconciliation – It’s not just a walk in the park
Clontarf Aboriginal College took out the top Secondary School category prize in the south metropolitan area for their project 'Reconciliation – It’s not just a walk in the park', for their Reconciliation Day activities that involved other schools and the broader community.
 
Floreat Park Primary School - Aboriginal Heritage in Bold Park
Floreat Park Primary School were the major winners in the Primary School category in the north metropolitan area for their PALS project, 'Aboriginal Heritage in Bold Park', that identified flora and fauna of Indigenous cultural significance in a suburban park, and produced a pamphlet to share this knowledge with others.
 
Hedland Senior High School - Reclaiming and Connecting Community
Hedland Senior High School was the winner of the Secondary School category in the regional north for their healthy life style focused PALS project 'Reclaiming and Connecting Community'.
 
Koorana Education Support Centre - Our Place
Koorana Education Support Centre in Warnbro won Winner Primary School category in the south metropolitan area for their interactive Dreamtime story project 'Our Place'.
 
Kununurra District High - Sharing Our Stories

Kununurra District High's 'Sharing Our Stories' project was the Winner of the Primary School category in the regional north for its oral history focussed PALS project involving weekly storytelling by Elders to two schools in Kununurra.

 
Spirit of Play Early Learning Centre - Six season project - Noongar Language Books
The Spirit of Play Early Learning Centre in Denmark was the winner of the Primary School category in the regional south for their 'Six season project - Noongar Language Books' PALS project.
 
Narrogin Primary School - Noongar Boodjar – Learning Together, Coming Together
Narrogin Primary School's PALS project 'Noongar Boodjar – Learning Together, Coming Together' won a regional north Highly Commended award in recognition of their efforts to increase participation by Indigenous parents at the school.

 
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School - Indigenous Art Pattern Project
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Kununurra received a regional north Highly Commended award for their PALS project 'Indigenous Art Pattern Project'.
 
Yandeyarra Remote Community School - Yande on Film
Yandeyarra Remote Community School's 'Yande on Film' PALS project received a regional north Highly Commended award for contributing to broader community understanding of the local Indigenous culture.
 
York District High School - Avon River Wargyl
York District High School's 2006 PALS project 'Avon River Wargyl' won a regional south Encouragement Award for its approach in identifying Indigenous significance in the York area and communicating this to others.

 
Nannup District High School - Coming Together in Nannup
Nannup District High School's 'Coming Together in Nannup' PALS awards 2006 submission won the regional south Secondary School category for creating community awareness about the strong cultural and spiritual importance of the Nannup area to the traditional owners of the land.
 
Moerlina Primary School - Moerlina Primary School
Moerlina Primary School in Mt Claremont received a south metropolitan Highly Commended award in the PALS 2006 awards for their project 'Many Voices – One Voice', that gave students a real understanding of the experiences of the Stolen Generation.
 
Lancelin Primary School - Harmony and Understanding

Lancelin Primary School's 2006 PALS project 'Harmony and Understanding' received a north metropolitan Encouragement Award.

 
Boyare Primary School - Sharing the Dream and PALS Reconciliation Camp
Boyare Primary School in Mirrabooka received a PALS 2006 Highly Commended award for the project 'Sharing the Dream and PALS Reconciliation Camp', that creatively introducing their multicultural school and school community to Indigenous culture.
 
Spearwood Alternative School - Coonana Camping - Kids N' Community

Spearwood Alternative School's PALS 2006 project submission 'Coonana Camping - Kids N' Community' received a south metropolitan Highly Commended award for their efforts in providing an opportunity for students to have real and positive interaction with Indigenous people.

 
Comet Bay College - Local Connections

Comet Bay College students were involved in a comprehensive PALS project that involved excursions, incursions, learning Noongar language and creating a striking piece of art work The Flag.

 
One Arm Point Remote Community School - Bardi Culture Program

One Arm Point Remote Community School won the 2008 Overall BHP Billiton Prize for their project Bardi Culture Program.

One Arm Point Remote Community School is 200 kilometres north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsular. The school has approximately 100 students.

 
Palmyra Primary School - Palmyra Dreaming

Palmyra Primary School was recoignised with the Troy Cook Youth Award for their commitment to Reconciliation with a mammoth five project entries in 2008.

 
Spirit of Play Community School - Six Seasons Project, Third Djilbra Camp

In 2008, Spirit of Play Community School was the Worsley Alumina Community Development Category Winner 2008, following their third Djilbra Camp that engaged the local community and provided opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together.

 
Baldivis Primary School - Koondarm Biddi Koorliny Kootadjinong

Baldivis Primary School students worked with Aboriginal Elders to learn Dreaming stories of local sites, which students used to develop a unique tourist map to share the cultural significance of the area with the entire community.

 
St Mary’s College Broome - Reconciliation and Resilience (Stolen Generation, Kimberley Issues)
St Mary's College Broome were awarded Art & Culture category winners for their project Reconciliation and Resilience project.
 
Banksia Grove Catholic Primary School - In Harmony

Banskia Grove Catholic Primary School received Runner Up in the Art & Culture Category. Established in 2004, the school is developing a Reconciliation precinct in the school to foster harmony and peace among students and staff.

 
North Tom Price Primary - Our Changing Lifestyle with the Discovery of Metals & Mining in Tom Price
North Tom Price Primary won the Sustainable Partnership Category in 2008 for their project, involving an extensive investigation into their local history to produce a four panel mural titled “Our Changing Lifestyle with the Discovery of Metal and Mining of Iron in Tom Price.”
 
Christian Brothers’ College - Kiwirrkurra: Cross Cultural Dreaming

Christian Brothers’ College and Iona Presentation College teamed up to visit Kiwirrkurra in 2008 coming Runner Up in the Sustainable Partnerships Category.

 
Manning Primary School - Value and Celebrate Indigenous Culture and Achievements
Manning Primary School won the Education Category 2008 for successfully implementing a successful attendance program within their shcool community.
 
Buntine Primary School - Buntine Journey
Buntine Primary School is located in a small town north of Wubin, their project was Runner Up in the Education Category 2008.
 
Brookman Primary School - NAIDOC Celebrations
Brookman Primary School won the Environment Category in 2008 with their comprehenisve NAIDOC celebrations.
 
Campbell Primary School - A Home for our Frog GORF
Campbell Primary School combined their passion for the environment with Reconciliation to win the Runner Up Environment Award 2008.
 
St Stephen's School - The Next Step
St Stephen's School won a High Commendation at the 2008 PALS Awards.
 
Newton Moore Senior High School - Sharing is Caring in the Celebration of Life
Newton Moore Senior High School won a High Commendation at the 2008 PALS Awards.
 
Currambine Catholic Primary School - Noongar Culture and Lifestyle Art Project
Currambine Catholic Primary School won a High Commendation at the 2008 PALS Awards.
 
East Kalgoorlie Primary School - Arts and Culture Across the School
East Kalgoorlie Primary School won a High Commendation at the 2008 PALS Awards.
 
North Parmelia Primary School - Kooya Pool (Frog Pond) and WA Youth Environment Conference
North Parmelia Primary School displayed their commitment to Reconciliation with two project entries in 2008.
 
Borden Primary School - Borden Noongar Language & Culture Project
Borden Primary School worked with Joe Williams, his father Elder Jack Williams, and Aunty Mrs Avril Dean to raise the children’s and community’s awareness of the Noongar culture generally and the cultural significance of Boola Meela (Bluff Knoll) and the Stirling Ranges. Over Term 3, the whole school (42 children from three classrooms) focused on Noongar language and culture.
 
Borden Primary School - Borden's Noongar Heritage

Overall BHP Billiton Prize 2009

Having no Indigenous students at the school hasn’t prevented Borden Primary from embarking on an ambitious PALS project to explore the town’s Noongar history.

Culunga Aboriginal Community School and St Stephen’s School have worked hard to create a flourishing vegetable garden at Culunga, with valuable assistance from Channel Nine’s Garden Gurus and members of the local community.
 
Riverlands School - Fridays at the Autumn Centre

Winner Sustainable Partnerships 2009

 

Riverlands School has continued their community project since PALS first started in 2004. Students enjoy weekly visits with the Indigenous Elders at the Elizabeth Hansen Autumn Centre, a hostel where patients from remote communities come to stay while receiving dialysis treatment.
 
Koorana Primary School – Circle of Life

Winner Sustainable Partnerships 2009

 

The school is implementing an Aboriginal Education Plan to expand their culturally inclusive curricular and professional development for all staff in Indigenous education
 
Hedland Senior High School – Harmony Tree

Runner up Sustainable Partnerships 2009

 

The Hedland Harmony Tree has grown from a small idea into an impressive four metre by four metre sculpture made from scrap steel that will soon take pride of place in the South Hedland Central Business District.
 
Neerigen Brook Primary School – Youth Engagement

Runner up Community Development 2009

 

Neerigen Primary works alongside at-risk students in the local Armadale area at the Champion Centre to boost the students’ self-esteem and encourage them to re-engage within the school environment.
 
Narrogin Primary School – Noongar Boodjar: Dryandra Dreaming

Winner Community Development 2009

 

Students enjoyed learning about Noongar culture and history through a series of special activities on NAIDOC Day and an excursion to the Dryandra Woodlands.
 
Osborne Primary School – From all the lands on earth we come; I am, you are, we are Australian

Runner up Environment 2009

 

Students at Osborne Primary come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Many students come to the school with very little or no knowledge and understanding of the rich heritage of our country, culture, values and traditions.

Winner Environment 2009

 

Over the past five years the school has undertaken a comprehensive program in Indigenous studies focusing on establishing Noongar partnerships with the local Indigenous community. This has seen a breaking down of commonly held prejudices and through integration and immersion in the local culture of stories, cultural practices and bush skills, non-Indigenous students have developed an understanding and appreciation of the ancient Noongar cultural past.
 
Riverlands School – Bounce High

Winner Health 2009

 

Riverlands School currently has five Indigenous students from disadvantaged backgrounds attending the school on scholarships. These students face great challenges adjusting to life in the city, having come down from the Kimberley with limited prior educational experiences. Intermittent hearing loss and other learning difficulties add to the challenges they face.
 
Wandering Primary School – Involvement

Runner up Education 2009

 

Wandering Primary School is a small rural school with no Indigenous students. In the past, there were many Indigenous students at Wandering because it was the nearest school to an Aboriginal mission that has since closed down. Teacher Jenny Dunn believed the students were missing a vital part of the town’s history.
 
East Waikiki Primary School – Connecting Communities

Winner Education 2009

 

Teachers at the school have always been committed to implementing an Aboriginal perspective across the curriculum to varying degrees but in the past they have independently pursued various approaches to Indigenous studies. In consultation with the local Indigenous communities, government agencies, students, staff, and the AIEO a Scope and Sequence document was developed for Indigenous Studies to guide teachers. It is a sequential planning tool that identifies opportunities for incorporating local traditions and providing valued and authentic opportunities to support effective Aboriginal cultural understanding throughout the curriculum.
 
West Beechboro Primary School – Katitjiny Noorn

A mosaic snake entwined around the buildings of the school, protecting the children and promoting the knowledge of virtues that bring the people of the world together, is the finished product of West Beechboro’s project.
 
Moorditj Noongar Community College – Stitched Together

Winner Arts and Culture 2009

 

Moorditj College students collaborated with students from Riverlands School every Friday for a term to work on creating and stitching the dolls, with the resulting friendships and cooperation a benefit to all.
 
One Arm Point Remote Community School – Ardyaloon Culture Program

High Commendation 2009

 

One Arm Point Remote Community school is located approximately 200 kilometres north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula. The school works together with community Elders to capture local community knowledge and history into the school curriculum. With community consultation the school has developed a cultural studies program to support and value cultural knowledge of the Bardi/Ardyaloon peoples.
 
Palmyra Primary School

School Community Award 2009

 

Palmyra Primary has a small number of Indigenous students.  The school is becoming increasingly aware and more accepting of Indigenous culture through ongoing projects but students still have limited opportunity to interact with Indigenous adults/teachers/leaders outside the school community.  Some   Indigenous students have had little opportunity to spend time with positive Indigenous male role models. Aboriginal culture has often been presented in a traditional context, giving some students the misunderstanding that Aboriginal culture is only a traditional and not a living culture.
 
Edale Kindergarten – Sharing our NAIDOC Day

Innovation Award 2009

 

Edale Kindergarten is a double unit purpose built kindergarten, with one side an Aboriginal kindy and the adjoining unit a multicultural kindy. There has been virtually no contact between the parents of both kindergartens. A lot of parents and children at the multicultural kindy have recently migrated to Australia and have little knowledge about the Aboriginal culture.
