| Riverlands Montessori School in Swan was awarded the 2006 PALS Youth Ambassador Award for the continuation of their outstanding project “Wednesdays at the Autumn Centre”. Students from Riverlands have been visiting the Elizabeth Hansen Autumn Centre since 2005, spending time with the Aboriginal Elders who have travelled from regional areas to Perth for dialysis treatment. The students ran activities with the Indigenous residents – including craft, recording oral histories, documenting dreamtime stories and sending photos to keep families connected. A DVD/video was created to prepare residents about the process of dialysis with the help of medical students and specialists. Students also created a biography of the stories of all the elders in the centre. The friendships that have developed from these visits have remained strong and a source of inspiration for the rest of the school and local communities. Riverlands won the Overall BHP Billiton Award in 2005 and will have continue to progress with their PALS buddy program project in 2007. |
