2004 marked the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Swan River Colony – the region we now know as Western Australia.
Aboriginal people have lived on this land for more than 50,000 years – but for 175 years Indigenous and non-Indigenous West Australians have shared life in this State.
The 175th anniversary in 2004 gave all West Australians the opportunity to reflect on the past, celebrate our achievements and look forward to a positive future.
In 2004, through 175th Anniversary celebrations, the government of Western Australia committed to:
- Developing greater awareness of the State’s history and heritage
- Recognising and valuing the diversity of the population
- Encouraging balanced debate about the past, the present and the future for Western Australia
- Fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the State
- Providing a legacy of understanding through the support of events and programs that will have ongoing significance
- Celebrating the achievements of all sections of the Western Australian community.
These aims were reflected in events and activities throughout the year. The 175th Anniversary website provides information on the State’s history and events and activities held throughout the 175th Anniversary year.
